Ok - there was at least one other there at that time. But I think I know the one you mean.

I know the one you mean. When I was there there was Mr Clarke in foreign languages and Mr Clarke in History/Humanities. I was only taught French once by Mr Clarke, he was a last minute substitute for Mrs Benchly.

It was indeed, Graham Clarke as confirmed by Longsands today. They will post details of his funeral arrangements on the Longsands website as they are expecting a great number of ex pupils wanting to attend. He touched many lives and his passion for language spurred my brother on to take a degree in French and Spanish and leave these shores to make a life in France. As CC said, Mr Clarke with the moustache, that's how he will be remembered by my year group :)

Thanks for posting this Brolly. I did 'A' level French with Mr Clarke in 1986-1988. I bumped into him a couple of years ago and he had a nice chat with him. Very sad news indeed.

Funeral is next Tuesday and due to the high level of teaching staff wishing to attend the school is basically closed to years 8 - 10. A further rememberance event will take place within school be fore the end of term.

THE REUNION AFTER PARTY AT THE WRESTLERS

Dave Kettle who has The Wrestlers has agreed to have a 'Reunion After Party' for those who haven't quite heard enough embarrasing stories from school days or haven't quite worked out who anyone is after 20 years of trying to forget! Or more appropriately for those who aren't quite feeling 36 and are up to partying the night away!

After Party will start from Midnight until the last man's standing - or girl!

i cant beleive that nobody has mentioned the legend of a maths teacher Mr "cut throat jake" Searle wicked teacher!!!

and Mr Brough the economics teacher much better than Mr Barber (although i did have a minor crush on him when he was my form tutor in the first year (1986)

Mr Slack what a legend and a genuinely fair man, in the 3rd year i was regularly busted for smoking and skiving and as a consequence forever on attendance report so i saw a lot of mr slack being the head of house and all!!!

What a nice guy, never too dramatic with the punishements the worse one for me was not being allowed to have my mum sign my report cards or letters as her signature was too easy to forge...... something he had clearly learned from teaching my brother....... and he had worked out that my dad was the stern parent!!!

John Slack we salute you, thanks for the education and for signing my passport form after i had left school!

I did GCSE maths with Mr Searle and he was my head of house during my five years at longsands.

Mr Searle taught me A/O maths in the 5th year. He was a good teacher, a little abrasive at times but not as bad as some others I could mention.

He scared the hell out of me and made my mum cross when she wanted to see him ant parents evening and he said he had no reason to see her...

but then i have seen him through 2 jobs on a one to one adult and think him and his wife are lovely people...

he was definately a good teacher...

probably fith in my list...

1. mr davis - head of house elgar - welsh.
2. mrs taylor - english, re
3. mr o'connell- drama, english and tutor til he left.
4. mrs titmus - music head - taught me to play the steel pans - and I got a C in music only 2 years after!!! - have played them 4 times since leaving school tho - bit costly!!

Dr. Gill, what a wonderful man he was. If I remember rightly, it was he who discovered that cockles changed sex halfway through their lives!
Mr. Bettis, taught me maths where everyone else failed (fourth year!)
Miss Buchanan, Gave me a love for art, the passion for not giving up, and a passion for the soft west coast scottish accent, coupled with the unrequited love for the older woman! *sighs*

Mr Searle, indeed taught me music, but I cannot find any mention of Mr Frayen :notworthy: The music teacher who taught his two sons, one who ended up as lead Violinist in the LPO and the other who was lead Cellist in the LSO. We were absolutely horrid to that great man, and I feel deeply ashamed of how he was treated, but remembering him always brings a smile to my face.
"Vor two housepoints... Who can tell me vhat two pieces ov muzik are being played" He would then take out his melodean or some other quirky piece if Austrian folk instrument, and play two entirely different pieces of music, different keys, and different timings, at the same time.
A Bloody Genius. Thank you Mr Frayen

John Slack taught me for Geography and Geology, Slackie was probably the best teacher I ever had, infact the man is a legend! Mr Searle was my house master and took me for maths...an excellent teacher although as Igillman says a little abrasive, however, his stock phrase 'is it relevant boy' will ring in my ears for ever as I use it myself lol. These two are old school , good quality teachers and were easily separated from the chaff!
I wonder how many teachers about today are as good?
Helen Bray is happily married with children, I was good friends with her late father and still keep in touch with her mum...Miss Bray is just as lovely as she was back then.
Did you know her sister was involved in the invention of Blue Tooth? A little factoid for ya.

my hubby went to isle of arran in 1987. with mr slack ,mr donerly and mr tindle. and he remembers mr slack screeching to a hault on motor way to then reverse 200 yrds back up the motor way to retrive a road kill ( a dead pheasent). needless to say we gave the pheasent a burial at sea on the way. he was one of the best teachers he ever had.
